Big Heads Up
Posted November 17th, 2008 by eye-prefer-parisI am amused by this large head bronze sculpture in the Jardin de Luxembourg. Le Prophete by sculptor Louis Derbre, stands 6.50 meters (21 ft.) and weighs 12 tons.
It's a stark contrast to the delicately detailed queens of France statues in white marble lining the park.
Louis Debre is a world renowned sculptor and his work has been shown all over the world including Brazil, the U.S.,Canada, Norway, Japan, Indonesia and the Ivory Coast. His crowning achievement came in 1997 with the six monumental sculptures he did for the Hiroshima peace memorial.
Night Hike to Spot Aussie Wildlife in Perth
Posted November 10th, 2008 by amandakA friend who lives in the Hills region of Perth – the eastern part of the city – recently gave me a great tip for an evening wildlife adventure when she told me about the Karakamia Sanctuary in Chidlow, about a 45-minute drive from the city centre. It’s a 680-acre block of land that was bought by the Australian Wildlife Conservancy, cleared of non-native pests like foxes and wild cats, and has now become home to growing numbers of endangered mammal species like numbats, wallabies and woylies.
Day Trip from Perth to the Pinnacles
Posted November 9th, 2008 by amandakTourist brochures in any Perth tourist office advertise day trips to the Pinnacles – a strange yellow desert of limestone columns situated within the Nambung National Park, a two-and-a-half hour drive north from Perth along the coast.
But my advice is to avoid the tourist coach trip up to the Pinnacles – if at all possible, get a hire car and drive yourself there. It’s absolutely worth the effort because this bizarre national park is unique, and you’ll find it hard to stop taking pictures.
A Little Gem in a Big Park
Posted November 3rd, 2008 by SusanneDublin’s Phoenix Park is the largest enclosed City-Park in Europe, perhaps even in the world. The opportunities for sightseeing, playing and watching sports and visiting places are vast. Nearly everybody has been to the Zoo, this year complete with a number of very thick-skinned babies (of the elephant and white rhino varieties), or the Papal Cross, where Pope John Paul II held the Dublin mass during his visit in 1979 (mainly, because that car park is THE best place to leave the car).
