I can still remember when the Burswood Casino first opened up here in Perth in the mid-1980s. It was a big sensation for this coming-of-age city to get its first casino, and back then dress standards were strict and queues were long.
These days, the dress standards have been relaxed a little and the casino has had a couple of makeovers and quite a few additions - including areas especially for the high-rolling tourists who come down to Perth to gamble large sums of money - but it's still an interesting place to spend an evening. It's attached to a hotel complex that includes several bars and pubs, with my favourite being the Irish bar named Paddy Hannan's. There is also a golf club attached to it which is very popular with tourists.
The Burswood Dome is also on site here and it's a common venue for international singers and bands to play at. However, its days are numbered, and it was meant to be demolished a couple of years ago - but until the Perth Arena is ready, the Dome will continue to host bands and other events, at this stage until 2011.
From many spots in Perth, you'll be able to spot the distinctive building of the casino and hotel complex with its big white angles. It's located on Great Eastern Highway, and you are likely to pass it on your way into Perth if you arrive at the airport. To get to the casino from the city, the easiest way is by bus from the Esplanade bus station (next to the Esplanade train station near the city centre) - many bus routes stop at the casino including #36, 296 and 787.
