Go To Prison in Fremantle
One of the most interesting places to visit in Fremantle, Perth's port town, is the Fremantle Prison. From the 1850s until quite recently - 1991, in fact - the prison was used to house Western Australian prisoners, after being built by convict labour.
Now that it's no longer a working prison, there are a number of different ways you can tour it, including the standard day tour, a torchlight (and slightly scary) evening tour, and a physically more testing tour of the tunnels that were dug under the prison.
I've visited the prison a number of times and I always discover something new. The prison chapel is interesting, and apparently some ex-prisoners still return here to get married. I'm also interested in seeing the cells they still have set up representing the different living conditions prisoners experienced here over the decades.
If you go: the Fremantle Prison on The Terrace in Fremantle is a short walk from the Fremantle train station. It's open every day except Good Friday and Christmas Day, from 10am to 5pm, longer for evening tours of course - but you have to book ahead.

Fun!
I just saw a special on this on television last week. It's on my to-do list for whenever my husband and I finally get over there.

Yes, it's a great spot. splash out for the tunnels tour if your budget goes that far. Although even the basic day tour is really fascinating!
